Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR):Augmented reality (AR) is the extension of human imagination into the realm of technology. It merges the real and the virtual, making it difficult to tell where one ends and the other begins.
A user can experience a different environment from one that is real to another that is fully digital. This blending of real and digital elements has many potential applications in science, technology, education and military operations.
In an augmented reality system, users can see digital objects overlain on the real world. For instance, an engineer could view a 3D model of a machine over a table top while making adjustments to it. Or, soldiers could see instructions for a mission in front of their faces instead of on paper. This way, they can access critical information wherever they are. However, what appears to be real may actually be fake in underlying terms- e.g., a user may still feel physical contact when handling digital objects while in an augmented reality environment.
Many people find this blending of realities exciting because it offers new possibilities for entertainment and education. For example, soccer fans could experience a game as if they were playing it themselves. They could move around freely without limiting themselves to designated areas. Or, schoolchildren could learn about animals by seeing them in their natural environments instead of in a classroom. However, some people feel that projecting images onto the world takes away from the experience of actually being there and experiencing things firsthand. They may interpret AR as someone wearing a device that projects virtual images over real-world scenes- e.g., as if someone wearing glasses was projecting images onto the world instead of directly onto his or her eyes. Some have gone so far as to call this sensation 'glasses-reality' or 'augmented reality.'
Many people have high hopes for augmented reality in future applications such as military strategy and gaming design. For example, AR could help soldiers avoid dangerous situations when viewing instructions for missions beforehand. It could also improve sports games by allowing players to interact with digital characters in 3D spaces instead of limited 2D spaces. However, there are also concerns regarding how companies use augmented reality to manipulate the public's perception of an experience. Some game developers have used technology to make their games more realistic; however, they did not always consider how this affected players' emotions or whether they were exploiting the public's perception of augmented reality for profit purposes.
